Job Description
- Start and end date: Begins immediately – August 1.
- Purpose: To further the mission of Whippoorwill Farm Day Camp through the planning and delivery of a horseback riding program that is safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities. Provide management to the physical operation of the horseback riding facilities and equipment.
- Reports to: Horseback Director and Executive Director.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have a comprehensive background in teaching various styles of horseback riding to all levels of riders
- Must have proven horseback instructional background. Specific certifications may be required
- Needs to be able to recognize major symptoms of horse illness and discomfort
- Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
- Love and appreciation for the camp culture and values it instills in children
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance and work with one’s peers
- Good character, integrity, and self control
- Maintain enthusiasm, energy, positive attitude and appearance and interact with campers at all times
- 20 years of age or older.
Specific Responsibilities
- Arrive at camp at 8:30 am and stay until buses leave at 4:00 pm
- Maintain punctuality and attendance
- Make sure that safety is priority one in all aspects of the horseback program
- Assist in maintaining the horse barn
- Including set up before Staff training
- Set and enforce barn rules
- Create cleaning guidelines to keep barn clean and organized
- Conduct inventory of all equipment and supplies and order when necessary
- Pack all materials/supplies at the end of the summer and store in barn apartment
- Assist Horseback Director in the training and supervision of Horseback staff and general camp staff
- Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training
- Educate staff in barn rules and specifics of schedules
- Assist in training horseback riding and counseling staff in their horseback riding responsibilities
- Assist Horseback Director in the planning, direction and supervise a safe and fun horseback riding program
- Deliver creative riding program activities
- Set daily and session schedules for the horse program
- Evaluate camp horseback riding policies and procedures and give necessary input regarding any possible additions or changes
- Evaluate the physical soundness of each horse daily and make judgments on whether horse can be ridden each day, given noticed horse conditions.
Other Job Duties:
- Participate as a member of the camp leadership team to plan, direct and supervise daily programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities and camp functions
- Work with Program Directors and other administrative staff to develop program and leadership awards
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned
