Begins May 23 and ends July 29.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
  • Love and appreciation for the camp culture and values it instills in children
  • Ability to relate to one’s peers
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance
  • Good character, integrity, and self-control
  • Maintain enthusiasm, energy, positive attitude and appearance, and interact with campers at all times during Den time and during activities
  • Must be a certified Lifeguard in Ellis or Red Cross by the beginning of camp
  • 18 years of age by May 1 or a graduating senior from high school

Reports to: Program Director and Executive Director

Position Purpose:
Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. As a Counselor and Lifeguard, your activities will be split between general activities and aquatic activities.

Specific Responsibilities

1. Ride bus with campers each morning unless other arrangements have been approved by the Executive Director.

2. Maintain punctuality and attendance.

3. On Mondays, instruct campers in camp rules and emergency procedures.

4. Greet campers in den each morning. Take attendance for Program Director and on designated days gather pre-sign-ups.

5. Follow camp dress code. The following should be worn daily: khaki shorts; staff t-shirt; tennis shoes, hiking boots or sandals with strap around ankle; watch; and staff name tag. All staff need to be clean and neatly groomed.

6. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.

  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including schedule and sportsmanship.
  • Keep personal business outside of camp.

7. Lead and sit with campers at all council ring times.

8. Explain and assist campers with sign-up procedures and in planning the weekly cookout.

9. Be ready to offer interest groups as scheduled. Keep activity area and supplies neat and orderly.

10. Provide basic first-aid for campers as needed. Bring camper to nurse for any health problem beyond basic first-aid.

11. Report to Program Director with any suggestions or concerns throughout the summer.

12. Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members.

  • Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.
  • Follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of camp.

13. As a lifeguard, you will supervise swim test for campers at each of the aquatic activities

14. Lifeguards will supervise two-three aquatic activities each day.

15. Lifeguards will maintain aquatic equipment and report any damages or concerns to the proper Director.
